Mumbai, April 10: In a significant crackdown on organized gold smuggling, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has dismantled a major trafficking ring under ‘Operation Dhabahu Blitz.’ A total of 29.37 kilograms of gold, valued at approximately ₹37.74 crore, was seized during this operation. Additionally, 24 women were arrested.
Based on precise intelligence, DRI officials conducted the operation at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai on Wednesday. Authorities suspected a group of female passengers arriving from Nairobi, who were attempting to smuggle a large quantity of gold into India.
Under ‘Operation Dhabahu Blitz,’ the DRI team swiftly and coordinatedly intercepted and examined the 24 foreign female travelers. During the search, 25.10 kilograms of gold bars and 4.27 kilograms of gold jewelry were recovered.
Initial investigations revealed that this was a highly organized smuggling network that employed trained carriers and systematic methods to evade security agencies. The gang was using women as carriers to facilitate the gold smuggling operation.
DRI officials indicated that the entire network may have international connections, and further investigations are underway to reach other members and leaders of the operation.
The DRI has made it clear that stringent action will continue against such smuggling networks that harm the country’s economic and fiscal integrity. The agency reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards any illegal activities that threaten national interests, promising strict legal action against the offenders.
