Major Gold Smuggling Attempt Foiled at Amritsar Airport

Amritsar, July 2: A significant gold smuggling case has been uncovered at Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport in Amritsar, Punjab. A joint team from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and the Customs Department apprehended a passenger arriving from Sharjah, UAE.

The passenger arrived on flight number 6E1428 from Sharjah to Amritsar. Acting on suspicion, authorities stopped him for an X-ray scan and a thorough personal search. During the investigation, they discovered 174 grams of gold in paste form, with a gross weight. After extraction, the pure weight of the gold was determined to be 150.04 grams, valued at approximately ₹22,05,588.

Currently, the Customs and DRI teams are investigating the case. They are trying to ascertain whether a larger smuggling network is involved. Security agencies have once again thwarted an attempt at gold smuggling at Amritsar Airport. The investigation is ongoing, aiming to uncover the entire network associated with this smuggling operation.

In a similar incident on June 26, the DRI arrested nine members of a smuggling gang at Mumbai Airport. They exposed an organized gold smuggling ring operating through this airport. During the investigation, authorities also identified a location where foreign smuggled gold was being melted down.

In another operation, the DRI in Bengaluru seized 1.8 kilograms of 24-carat gold paste hidden in multiple layers of clothing of an international traveler. Following this, a search of the suspect’s home led to the recovery of approximately 1.5 kilograms of gold jewelry, 45 kilograms of silver, and both Indian and foreign currency. The DRI has also arrested this individual.
