Bhubaneswar, August 9: The ongoing ‘Nasha Mukt Odisha Abhiyan’ has achieved a significant milestone with a major drug bust in Sonpur. Police seized over 12.5 quintals of cannabis, valued at approximately ₹13 crore in the international market.
Authorities received a tip-off about a truck transporting a large quantity of cannabis through the Subalaya police station area. Acting on this information, police launched a special operation to intercept the suspicious vehicle.
Upon arrival, the police team conducted a thorough search of the truck. However, the driver and an accomplice fled the scene as soon as they noticed the police presence.
During the raid, a substantial amount of cannabis was recovered from the truck, which has since been confiscated. Police have initiated searches at various locations to locate the fleeing suspects.
So far, no arrests have been made in this case. However, police are confident they will identify and apprehend other individuals connected to the smuggling network soon.
The state police headquarters has commended this significant operation. Odisha’s Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurania congratulated Sonpur’s Superintendent of Police (SP) Narayan Nayak and his team for their successful efforts.
A case has been registered at the Subalaya police station, and the investigation is ongoing as authorities delve into the cannabis trafficking network.
It is noteworthy that the Odisha government is committed to achieving a completely drug-free state. Chief Minister Mohan Chara Majhi announced a 100-week public movement aimed at eradicating the drug problem. This announcement was made during a special event at Kalinga Stadium, which marked the launch of the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047’ campaign, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from New Delhi.
In addition to Chief Minister Majhi, Governor Dr. Haribabu Kambhampati, Minister of Sports and Youth Services Surya Banshi Suraj, and hundreds of students virtually attended the national program organized by ‘My Bharat’ under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, where the Prime Minister addressed the audience. Governor Dr. Kambhampati administered the pledge for a ‘Drug-Free Youth – Developed India’ campaign to all present.
