Major Arms Smuggling Bust in Punjab: Four Arrested Including Afghan National

Chandigarh, June 8: The Amritsar Commissionerate Police has achieved a significant breakthrough in combating cross-border illegal arms smuggling and hawala networks. Four suspects, including an Afghan national, have been arrested. Authorities seized eight advanced pistols and seven live cartridges from their possession. This information was shared by Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav via a post on X.

The DGP revealed that preliminary investigations indicated the suspects were allegedly in contact with a trafficker based abroad, who supplied illegal arms through covert channels. The recovered weapons were reportedly intended for distribution to criminal elements.

FIRs have been filed against the accused at the Islamabad Police Station and the Gate Hakima Police Station in Amritsar. Ongoing investigations aim to identify other associates connected to the network and to uncover further recoveries and arrests.

Earlier, on June 3, the Punjab DGP announced that the Amritsar Police Commissionerate had made significant progress in the ongoing campaign against drug and illegal arms trafficking. During this operation, two suspects were apprehended, leading to the seizure of 2.225 kilograms of heroin, six advanced pistols, and twelve live cartridges.

Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar stated that initial investigations revealed the suspects were in direct contact with active traffickers across the border. They received heroin shipments through a network linked to Pakistan, which were then distributed to active criminal elements in various regions of Punjab. Bhullar emphasized that the seized weapons are of advanced quality and could have been used in serious criminal activities.

On June 4, a post from the Punjab DGP’s official X handle reported the recovery of an improvised explosive device (IED) during the operation, thwarting a sinister plot to target critical public infrastructure in SAS Nagar.

The DGP affirmed that the Punjab Police is fully committed to dismantling terrorist networks, eradicating organized crime, and ensuring peace and public safety throughout the state.
