Mumbai, April 26: In a significant anti-corruption operation, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested a junior engineer from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) while he was accepting a bribe of ₹2.5 lakh. This operation took place on April 24.
The arrested individual has been identified as Vishal Bhavsaar Vani, who was assigned to the stormwater drains department of BMC. He allegedly demanded a total bribe of ₹10 lakh to facilitate necessary approvals for a construction site, particularly for drainage clearance. He later agreed to accept ₹2.5 lakh as the first installment.
The complainant, refusing to pay the bribe, contacted the ACB on April 22. Following this, the ACB devised a plan and set up a trap. The operation was overseen by Assistant Commissioner Praveen Patil and other senior officials. As soon as the accused engineer accepted the ₹2.5 lakh bribe, the ACB team apprehended him on the spot.
The ACB has registered a case against the accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The investigation is ongoing to determine if other officials are involved in this network.
The ACB has urged citizens to report any incidents of bribery or corruption immediately through its helpline or official website, to ensure strict action against such cases.
This incident highlights the persistent issue of corruption within Mumbai’s administrative system and underscores the need for stringent monitoring and public participation to effectively combat it.
