Russia Launches Drone Attack on Ukraines Chernobyl Nuclear Facility, Raising Radiation Concerns

New Delhi, June 7: Russia has once again targeted the special area surrounding Ukraine’s Chernobyl nuclear power plant with a drone strike. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that a significant nuclear storage facility was hit during this attack.

In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, President Zelensky stated, “Russia has once again attacked the special area around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. A ‘Shahed’ drone targeted a building housing spent nuclear fuel. This is a highly important and sensitive nuclear structure, and this attack by Russia is utterly condemnable.”

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Energy Ministry, and all relevant services are working to ensure that all partners are promptly informed about this incident.

President Zelensky emphasized that Russia deliberately targeted this specific nuclear facility. So far, radiation levels have not been found to exceed normal limits. However, Russia’s reckless behavior continues to escalate, crossing all boundaries.

Zelensky noted that Ukrainian emergency response teams have extinguished the fire caused by the attack at the facility. The world now needs to take new and stringent measures to make Russia realize that its acts of terrorism will have consequences.

He also reported that the previous night, Russia attacked civilian targets in 13 regions of Ukraine. In just the past week, Russia has launched a total of 88 missiles, over 3,250 attack drones, and nearly 1,800 guided aerial bombs on Ukraine. Pressure on Russia must be increased.

Meanwhile, just a day earlier, Russian air defense forces claimed to have shot down 144 Ukrainian drones during airstrikes in the Leningrad region. According to regional governor Alexander Drozdenko, there was no significant damage. However, reports of drone debris falling in several districts have caused minor damage to homes.

On Friday, despite President Zelensky’s proposal for talks and meetings aimed at ending the war, his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin has shown no willingness to engage. He has currently dismissed the possibility of a face-to-face meeting with the leader of Kyiv.
