New Delhi, March 10: Delhi Police arrested Himanshu Gupta, the main contractor appointed by the Delhi Jal Board, on Tuesday in connection with the death incident in Janakpuri.
A team from the Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) of the western district apprehended Gupta in Udaipur, Rajasthan, where he was hiding. Police officials stated that he is being brought back to Delhi for further investigation.
This arrest comes amid the ongoing investigation into the death of 25-year-old Kamal Dhyani, who fell into an unsafe excavation pit by the Delhi Jal Board in Janakpuri earlier this year while riding his motorcycle. On February 28, a Delhi court had denied bail to the accused laborer, Yogesh, in this case. The court found that instead of attempting to save the victim, the accused tried to conceal the incident.
Judicial Magistrate Harjot Singh Aujla of Dwarka Court remarked that Yogesh chose to inform his employer about the incident before making any rescue attempts, suggesting a deliberate effort to suppress the event rather than a response of helplessness.
The court expressed concern not only about the presence of the open pit but also about the deliberate actions taken by the accused after witnessing Dhyani’s body. The court noted, “Prima facie, evidence suggests that instead of raising an alarm, seeking help, or making serious attempts to save the victim, the accused prioritized informing his employer and later attempted to cover up the site.”
According to the investigation, Kamal Dhyani fell into a 4.5-foot deep pit at 12:15 AM on February 6 while returning home from a call center in Rohini. Police reported that he remained in the pit for nearly eight hours, despite at least six people being aware of the incident, yet they failed to inform the authorities.
Sub-contractor Rajesh Kumar Prajapati and laborer Yogesh have already been arrested for refusing to assist in retrieving Dhyani’s body, despite being aware of the incident.
Police revealed that Yogesh informed Prajapati, after which both attempted to conceal their mistake of not barricading the excavation site. The investigation also uncovered that Himanshu Gupta and Kavish Gupta, directors of the company appointed by the Delhi Jal Board, were informed by Prajapati about the incident approximately an hour later. However, they reportedly ignored the information and fled the scene.
