Kolkata, June 21: TMC MP Mahua Moitra ridiculed the National Citizens Party of India (NCPI) on Sunday for its claims of being a champion for the poor. In her social media post, Moitra expressed skepticism about how long NCPI could maintain its image as a defender of the impoverished, especially after 20 rebel TMC MPs joined a nearly defunct political party in Tripura.
In response to Moitra’s comments, rebel TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar fired back, referencing the RG Kar case. She stated, “Justice for Abhaya is sought by Bengal, justice for Abhaya is sought by India, justice for Abhaya is sought by humanity. We demand the death penalty for the real rapist.”
Meanwhile, Moitra took to the social media platform X, asserting that NCPI is now a new party formed by the 20 MPs elected under the TMC symbol. On its Facebook page, it claims to assist the poor in society. Moitra sarcastically hoped that this new party would also help the 20 individuals, who are not as impoverished, and labeled them as traitors.
Moitra is among the few TMC MPs who remain loyal to former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee. Since the 20 rebel MPs, led by Dr. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and Shatabdi Roy, defected from TMC to join NCPI, Moitra has been vocally critical, whether on social media or in conversations with journalists.
Additionally, Moitra condemned the state police’s decision to freeze three official bank accounts of the TMC. This action followed a letter written by former TMC treasurer and West Bengal minister Arup Biswas to bank officials, requesting the freezing of these accounts. The letter was prompted by complaints filed by some rebel TMC legislators, alleging that funds acquired through corruption during the previous Mamata Banerjee administration were deposited in these accounts. Consequently, bank officials decided to freeze debit transactions from these accounts.
In response to the allegations from the rebel legislators, Moitra stated that this group, whether MPs or MLAs, should clarify whether the funds provided by the party for their campaign expenses during the recent assembly elections were accounted for or unaccounted.
Moitra asserted that if they believe they used unaccounted money in their campaigns and were elected, it is their moral responsibility to resign from their positions. “But I know they won’t resign. They are shameless. They want to benefit from both sides,” she concluded.
