Bengaluru, June 23: A 37-year-old owner of a paying guest (PG) hostel in eastern Bengaluru has died following an assault involving a cricket bat. The incident occurred after he attempted to stop two young men from drinking alcohol outside his hostel. In a fit of rage, the hostel owner brought a bat to confront the students, but they overpowered him and used the bat to strike him instead.
The altercation took place between 6:00 PM and 6:30 PM near the Lakshmi Narasimha PG on Kasturinagar Main Road, within the jurisdiction of the Ramamurthy Nagar police station.
The deceased has been identified as Madhav Matale, while the suspects are Rakesh (21), a final-year B.Com student, and Don Bright (20), a first-year BBA student. Both have been arrested. Rakesh is from Kammanahalli, and Don Bright resides in Jeevanahalli, Bengaluru.
According to police statements, the confrontation arose from a dispute between the victim and the accused. Initial investigations reveal that the victim objected when some young men were washing their feet with tap water inside the hostel premises.
This disagreement escalated into a heated argument, leading to violence. Madhav, in anger, retrieved a cricket bat from the hostel intending to retaliate against the two students. However, the students managed to seize the bat from him and attacked him, resulting in severe injuries.
Madhav was rushed for medical treatment but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
Police sources indicate that the assault occurred after the victim expressed his discontent with the behavior of the accused outside the hostel. Following the incident, a case was registered, and both suspects were taken into custody.
Senior police officials visited the scene and have initiated an investigation. They are currently reviewing witness statements and other evidence to establish the sequence of events related to the homicide.
Further investigations are ongoing.
