Mumbai, August 4: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the state is rapidly advancing its metro projects. This initiative aims to significantly enhance safe, modern, and fast public transport in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). He instructed officials to ensure that once construction begins, each metro project should be completed within three years.
A meeting of the Cabinet Infrastructure Committee took place on Tuesday, chaired by the Chief Minister. Attendees included Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif, Chief Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, and senior officials from various departments.
Fadnavis emphasized the development of a comprehensive metro network to make public transport in Maharashtra more efficient, faster, and environmentally friendly. Currently, metro services spanning 174 kilometers are operational, while construction is underway on 291 kilometers of routes. Additionally, 130 kilometers of routes are in the approval process, and detailed project reports (DPR) are being prepared for 87.15 kilometers.
During the meeting, it was presented that a total investment of ₹2.80 lakh crore is allocated for metro projects in the state. The central government will contribute ₹27,216 crore, while the state government will provide ₹50,250 crore. Furthermore, ₹75,729.62 crore will be financed through the MMRDA, local bodies, and planning authorities. The remaining funds will be raised through government-guaranteed loans.
The proposed metro network will cover 428.89 kilometers in the MMR, 169.45 kilometers in the Pune Metropolitan Region, and 85.20 kilometers in the Nagpur Metropolitan Region. The total length of the proposed and operational metro network in the state will reach 683.53 kilometers.
The state government has devised an annual plan to develop various metro routes in Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur. This year, the focus is on 87 kilometers of routes with 56 stations, while the goal for 2029-30 is to establish a network of 302 kilometers and 161 stations.
The meeting also reviewed the progress of the proposed Metro-10 project from Mira Village to Gaymukh in the MMR. The notification for this route has already been issued.
This approximately 9.68-kilometer route will feature five elevated stations, with an estimated project cost of ₹8,500 crore. The Chief Minister directed that the construction of this metro corridor should be completed within three years.
The state government has planned several new metro routes for the future, including Mumbai Metro-11 (Anik Depot-Wadala-Gateway of India), Hadapsar-Loni Kalbhor, and Hadapsar-Saswad Road, Navi Mumbai Metro-1A and 2 (Belapur-Sagar Sangam and Pendhar-Navi Mumbai International Airport), Kanhan River-Kanhan City (Nagpur Phase-2 extension), Mumbai Metro-8 (CSMIA-NMIA), Mumbai Metro-10 (Gaymukh-Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk), Mumbai Metro-13 (Shivaji Chowk-Vasai-Virar), Mumbai Metro-12A (Manpada-Kalyan-Khutari-Taloja), Mumbai Metro-3 extension (Cuffe Parade-Navy Nagar), Mumbai Metro-14 (Kanjur-Badlapur), and Pune Metro Phase-3 (Nigdi-Wakad-Nashik Phata-Chakan).
