Mumbai, March 4: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Wednesday that the state government will soon approach the central government to request amendments to the 2008 regulations concerning explosive factories.
Responding to discussions under Rule 93 in the Legislative Council, he emphasized the urgent need to implement automation in the handling of explosives. This change aims to reduce human intervention and enhance worker safety.
Fadnavis highlighted a recent tragic incident at a private explosive factory, SBL Energy Limited, in the Raulgav area of Nagpur district, where a significant explosion resulted in the deaths of 19 workers and injuries to 17 others.
He stated that the families of the deceased will receive compensation of ₹75 lakh from the company, ₹5 lakh from the state government, and ₹2 lakh from the central government. The injured will be awarded ₹25 lakh, and their medical expenses will be fully covered.
The Chief Minister stressed the importance of extreme caution when handling such volatile materials. He advocated for the use of robots or fully automated systems to minimize human involvement and prevent future accidents.
The proposal that the state government will send to the center will include recommendations for regulatory changes, enhanced safety measures through automation, and strategies to reduce human intervention.
Meanwhile, Home State Minister Yogesh Kadam reported on another issue, stating that cases have been filed against individuals involved in the illegal trade of narcotics in Pune without licenses or prescriptions.
This issue was raised by Chitra Wagh, with Abhijit Wanjari asking supplementary questions. The minister confirmed that charges have been filed against five individuals, two of whom have been arrested, while three others are still at large. A charge sheet has been submitted to the court against all five accused.
Investigations revealed that the seized drugs were genuine but were not purchased from local medical stores. Preliminary inquiries suggest that these drugs were sourced from outside the state, and the entire supply network is under investigation.
He added that no companies producing counterfeit narcotics have been found in Pune. The Food and Drug Administration is conducting regular inspections across Pune and Maharashtra, taking strict action against violators.
