Kolkata, August 28: The faction of Trinamool Congress, led by former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, approached the Kolkata High Court on Friday regarding the ongoing dispute over the removal of illegal billboards from the roof of the party’s MP Abhishek Banerjee’s office on Camac Street in central Kolkata.
Trinamool Congress lawyer and former Advocate General of West Bengal, Kishore Dutta, drew the court’s attention to the matter. The special single bench, presided over by Justice Raja Basu Chaudhuri, granted permission to file a lawsuit regarding the issue.
However, the decision on the Trinamool Congress’s request for an immediate hearing is still pending. The petitioner’s lawyer informed Justice Basu Chaudhuri’s bench that employees from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) arrived at the Camac Street office at 4:45 PM on Thursday and began removing the billboards.
Dutta informed the court that the acting Chief Justice of the Kolkata High Court, Tapobrata Chakraborty, was made aware of the situation on Thursday and had advised the petitioner to bring it to the attention of Justice Basu Chaudhuri’s bench.
Following this, the Trinamool Congress lawyer requested the bench to hear the case as soon as possible. However, Justice Chaudhuri instructed the lawyer to first file the case and present it with a case number before the bench. The judge also mentioned that they could not proceed with the hearing until a case number was available.
Justice Chaudhuri stated that the hearing would take place on Friday, only after the case number was assigned. He also instructed the petitioner to notify the other parties involved, including KMC and Kolkata Police.
Tension escalated on Camac Street on Thursday when KMC officials, accompanied by Kolkata police personnel, arrived to remove an illegal billboard from the office of Abhishek Banerjee, the party’s MP and Mamata Banerjee’s nephew.
After two rounds of clashes between the police and Trinamool Congress workers, the billboard was finally removed. On Thursday, Abhishek announced that he would approach the Kolkata High Court regarding the matter.
