New Delhi, March 23: The implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) has significantly expanded LPG access across the country, reaching nearly every household. As of March 1, 2026, approximately 105.6 million PMUY connections have been distributed nationwide, including 5.26 million in Maharashtra and 4.39 million in Gujarat. This information was presented in Parliament on Monday.
The government has also approved the issuance of an additional 2.5 million LPG connections during the fiscal year 2025-26 to address pending applications and ensure complete LPG accessibility throughout the country.
Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Suresh Gopi, provided a written response in the Rajya Sabha, noting that under this expansion, about 48,000 new connections were provided in Maharashtra and approximately 87,000 in Gujarat by March 1, 2026.
Before the launch of PMUY, LPG coverage in India was around 62%, a figure that has now significantly increased. Additionally, the usage of LPG among beneficiaries has risen. In the fiscal year 2021-22, the average annual consumption was 3.68 cylinders, which has increased to 4.80 cylinders by 2025-26.
Oil marketing companies (OMCs) have also improved the supply chain for domestic LPG significantly.
Gopi stated, “As of March 1, 2026, there are a total of 25,605 LPG distributors in the country, with 17,677 located in rural areas, supported by 214 LPG bottling plants.”
To enhance LPG access in rural and remote areas, 8,037 new distributors have been established between April 2016 and February 2026, with 93% (7,444) located in rural regions.
According to the minister, the government is also taking steps to make LPG more affordable for PMUY consumers. In the fiscal year 2025-26, the government is providing a subsidy of up to ₹300 on 14.2 kg cylinders (and proportionately on 5 kg cylinders), applicable for a maximum of nine refills.
Additionally, through the initiative named ‘Saksham,’ oil companies (PSUs) are raising awareness among the public about energy conservation and sustainable development.
