Kolkata, May 17: Protests erupted on Sunday at the Park Circus Seven-Point Crossing in central Kolkata against the demolition of illegal constructions in the Tiljala area. Demonstrators attempted to block the road, leading to heightened tensions in the vicinity.
During the protest, participants allegedly threw bricks and stones at police officers, damaging several police vehicles. Multiple officers sustained injuries, and some buses on the road were also affected.
The police have arrested several individuals in connection with the incident. Additional Police Commissioner Ashesh Biswas stated that no one involved in the violence would be spared. Central forces were deployed alongside Kolkata police to manage the situation.
According to police reports, local residents gathered at Park Circus to oppose the demolition of illegal structures in Tiljala. Authorities noted that the gathering did not have prior approval. They also claimed that individuals from outside the area participated in the protest.
The situation escalated when police attempted to clear the road and disperse the crowd. Following this, protesters reportedly began throwing bricks, causing chaos in the area.
Commissioner Biswas remarked, “This was an illegal gathering. The protesters were trying to block the road. When police intervened, they were attacked, and three police vehicles were vandalized.”
He emphasized that those who assaulted the police would face strict consequences. Biswas added, “We are investigating who is behind this. All accused will be arrested, and stringent action will be taken. We have received information that outsiders were also present among the locals. Three of our officers have been injured. We were prepared due to prior intelligence, which helped prevent a major incident.”
Regarding allegations of police using batons against protesters, he stated, “If there is an attack on the police, baton charges will be employed. There will be no gender discrimination in this matter.”
Recently, a fire in an illegal factory operating within a residential building in Tiljala resulted in the deaths of two individuals, with three others injured. Following another casualty on Sunday, the death toll rose to three.
