Kolkata, June 24: In light of the upcoming Muharram celebrations, Kolkata Police has issued stringent guidelines to maintain law and order and communal harmony. The police have made it clear that no weapons will be allowed during this year’s processions. Additionally, the use of DJs and the display of excessively tall tazias have been prohibited.
On Wednesday, the police announced that directives were sent to all police stations under their jurisdiction on Tuesday evening. According to police officials, these measures aim to ensure peace and order in the city.
Muharram will be observed next Friday across West Bengal, including Kolkata. In preparation, deputy commissioners from relevant police stations held meetings with various station heads. During these discussions, instructions from the Kolkata Police headquarters in Lalbazar were communicated to all stations.
The police headquarters clarified that no new processions will be permitted during Muharram. Only those processions that have been traditionally held for many years will be allowed.
Moreover, the display of weapons during any procession is strictly prohibited. Special guidelines regarding the height of tazias have also been issued. Officials stated that tazias should not be excessively tall to avoid damage to electrical wires, cables, and other structures, ensuring public safety.
Kolkata Police has also mandated that no DJs will be used during any procession. If microphones or loudspeakers are utilized, they must adhere to the sound limits set by the Calcutta High Court. Organizers must ensure that no sound pollution occurs.
The police have advised against using sensitive or inflammatory messages and have instructed officials to keep a close watch on such matters. Additionally, organizers are required to meet with police to review all regulations.
Extra police forces will be deployed along the routes of the Muharram processions on Friday. The police emphasized that maintaining peace and brotherhood throughout the event will be a top priority.
