Kolkata, June 24: The Kolkata High Court‘s single-judge bench dismissed a plea for expedited hearing regarding Abhishek Banerjee’s request to travel abroad for eye treatment. Banerjee, the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress and a Lok Sabha member, filed the petition on Tuesday before Justice Sougat Bhattacharya.
Along with the request for permission to travel abroad, Banerjee sought a fast-track hearing for his case. However, on Wednesday, Justice Bhattacharya’s bench stated that there was no valid reason to grant an expedited hearing, affirming that the case would proceed through the standard legal process.
Recently, following an order from another single-judge bench of the Kolkata High Court, the Criminal Investigation Department of West Bengal Police had questioned Abhishek Banerjee twice regarding discrepancies in signatures related to a significant proposal concerning appointments to reserved seats in the West Bengal Assembly.
Previously, Justice Kaushik Chanda’s bench had granted Banerjee interim protection from police action, but with conditions, one of which prohibited him from traveling abroad without prior court approval.
In light of this restriction, Banerjee filed a petition on Tuesday seeking permission for foreign travel for treatment and a fast-track hearing. While the main request for travel has been accepted, the plea for expedited hearing has been rejected.
In October 2016, Banerjee was involved in an accident while returning to Kolkata from a party event in Murshidabad district, resulting in severe eye injuries. He has previously received treatment at various hospitals in India and later sought care abroad.
