Kolkata, June 24: The Calcutta High Court granted interim anticipatory bail to former Trinamool Congress MLA Aditi Munshi on Wednesday in a case filed by the West Bengal police. She is accused of possessing assets disproportionate to her income.
However, Justice Jay Sengupta’s single bench rejected the anticipatory bail plea of her husband, Devaraj Chakraborty. The court instructed both to cooperate with the police during the investigation.
The court noted that they have a four-month-old baby, which was a factor in granting interim relief to the mother.
Additionally, the bench imposed a temporary travel ban on both, directing them not to travel abroad without the High Court’s permission. They were also ordered to submit their passports to the lower court.
The court further stated that neither Munshi nor her husband should contact or attempt to influence any witnesses during the interim period.
Moreover, Munshi is prohibited from entering the Baguiati police station area, where the case was registered.
According to police reports, the asset case alleges that the couple secretly transferred approximately ₹100 crore worth of property to relatives and acquaintances.
It is claimed that this was done to underreport their assets in their election affidavit. They are also accused of amassing wealth through extortion, running a syndicate, and land grabbing.
Officials indicated that these activities occurred in the Rajarhat-Gopalpur assembly constituency, which Munshi represented from 2021 to 2026. However, she faced defeat in the recent West Bengal assembly elections.
