Jian, Jiangxi, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : A tragic landslide occurred in Jian, a city in Jiangxi province, eastern China, on Saturday, claiming the lives of two individuals. Following the disaster, approximately ten others have been reported missing.
Rescue teams have been actively searching for survivors. On Sunday morning, firefighters discovered one of the missing persons in the debris of a collapsed house in Mingkeng village, Gao Ping township.
The landslide was triggered by several days of heavy rainfall linked to Typhoon Saudel. Two additional individuals were rescued and are currently in stable condition. Efforts to provide relief and transport affected residents to safety are ongoing, with measures in place to prevent further disasters.
According to the county’s flood control and drought relief headquarters, over 640 rescue workers had arrived at the site by 10 PM on Saturday. Due to damage to access roads, the first team from the fire department reached the village using mountain paths, equipped with life-saving tools, drones, and search dogs.
So far, 39 villagers have been relocated to safe areas. In light of the potential risks, more than 5,300 residents from surrounding areas have also been evacuated. Repair work on the damaged roads and power lines is still underway, and telecommunications services have been restored.
In response to the disaster, Jiangxi’s disaster prevention and relief committee activated a Level-III provincial emergency response on Saturday afternoon. Approximately 161,500 people across the province have been affected by Typhoon Saudel.
The Ministry of Natural Resources of China raised the geological disaster response level for Jiangxi from Level-IV to Level-III on Saturday morning and dispatched a team to assist with rescue operations.
Additionally, the National Disaster Reduction Commission and the Ministry of Emergency Management initiated a Level-IV national emergency response for natural disaster relief. A specialized task force equipped with slope monitoring radar and other tools has also been sent to support rescue efforts.
The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) allocated 20 million yuan (about 2.95 million USD) from the central natural disaster relief fund on Saturday to aid emergency relief and reconstruction efforts. This funding will be used to rebuild damaged infrastructure, including roads, water conservation facilities, schools, hospitals, and other public service buildings, with the aim of restoring normalcy to affected areas as quickly as possible.
