Jabalpur, June 24: The Jabalpur High Court in Madhya Pradesh will commence daily hearings on the Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation case starting July 15. This directive was issued by the bench comprising Justices Anand Pathak and VP Sharma.
In 2019, the Madhya Pradesh government increased the OBC reservation from 14% to 27%. This decision has led to ongoing legal proceedings in the high court.
Advocate Amit Sanghi, representing the petitioners challenging the government’s decision, informed reporters that the bench has set the next hearing date for July 15. Until then, the existing OBC reservation of 14% will remain in effect.
The core issue in this case revolves around the total reservation limit in the state, which is capped at 50% for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and OBCs. Previously, the OBC reservation was set at 14%, but the state government’s recent increase to 27% has been contested. The court had issued an interim order on March 19, 2019, maintaining the reservation at 14%. Following the hearings starting July 15, a swift resolution is anticipated.
