Kolkata, September 20 (Daily Kiran) : In a significant move, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and the Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC) have announced that over 33% of their wards will be reserved for women in the upcoming elections at the end of 2026. This decision is part of the draft proposal for ward delimitation recently released.
According to the draft, the number of wards in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation will increase from the current 144 to 209. Out of these, 70 wards will be specifically reserved for women, representing more than 33% of the total.
Similarly, the Howrah Municipal Corporation plans to expand its wards from 50 to 68, with 23 wards earmarked for women. This accounts for approximately 34% of the total wards.
Political parties and other stakeholders have been given the opportunity to voice any objections or suggestions regarding the draft delimitation list until October 5.
Preparations for the elections in both municipal corporations are already underway. Elections are expected to be held in November, following the Durga Puja festivities.
However, officials involved in the electoral process have noted a lack of general enthusiasm for the upcoming municipal elections. Political analysts suggest that internal factions within the Trinamool Congress party may be contributing to this uncertainty.
