Varanasi, September 20 (Daily Kiran) : Public life in India has marked a significant milestone with Prime Minister Narendra Modi completing 25 years in leadership roles. Celebrating this achievement, Padma Shri Dr. Rajnikant, known as the “GI Man,” praised Modi’s governance and its positive effects on Varanasi. He highlighted how the GI (Geographical Indication) tagging has boosted local businesses and empowered grassroots communities.
Modi first took office as Chief Minister of Gujarat on October 7, 2001. To commemorate this occasion, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is conducting a nationwide “Seva Sankalp Abhiyan” from September 17 to October 17, 2026. On October 7, Modi will celebrate 25 years in significant political roles.
Speaking in Varanasi, Dr. Rajnikant elaborated on the success of the GI model in the region. He noted that 32 GI-tagged products from Varanasi and surrounding districts generate approximately ₹25,500 crores annually. This ecosystem connects around 20 to 24 lakh people directly and indirectly.
He emphasized that many beneficiaries include women, minorities, and members of the Dalit and OBC communities, as well as skilled artisans. This GI ecosystem has not only achieved economic success but has also become a vital source of livelihood and social empowerment. Consequently, the Varanasi GI model is being promoted and adopted in various parts of India. These 32 GI tags represent three key aspects of the region’s heritage: crafts, cuisine, and culture.
Reflecting on Varanasi’s rich heritage, Dr. Rajnikant expressed pride in being in one of the world’s oldest cities, often described as “older than history.” Varanasi, with its thousands of years of history, remains vibrant, preserving a remarkable diversity of crafts, arts, traditions, and skills. The talents of local artisans have spread throughout India and beyond.
