New Delhi, September 3: Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, has expressed his displeasure in a letter to Union Minister JP Nadda regarding the purification incident that occurred in Haldwani. He pointed out that nearly 24 days have passed without any FIR being filed against the culprits involved.
In his letter, Kharge recalled raising the issue of purification based on untouchability during his speech on August 8, following a public meeting in Haldwani.
Kharge reminded that during his intervention, JP Nadda had acknowledged the seriousness of the matter, stating, “What Mallikarjun Kharge has said is indeed a very distressing issue. It is not only painful for the Congress party but for all of us. An investigation will certainly take place regarding what transpired. I want to emphasize that the Bharatiya Janata Party does not support such activities. I condemn this and the national president will look into it deeply. The hurt caused to your sentiments is regrettable for all of us.”
However, Kharge noted that despite Nadda’s assurance that strict action would be taken against anyone found guilty after the investigation, no FIR has been filed against the organizations and individuals responsible for this heinous act even after 24 days.
He highlighted that the most objectionable aspect of this incident was that purification took place at the Ramleela Maidan, where he had addressed the rally, contradicting the spirit of the Indian Constitution and human values. It is widely understood that such purification processes are directly linked to untouchability.
Kharge cited an example, stating, “Baba Saheb Dr. B.R. Ambedkar drank water from a tank during the Mahad movement, yet people filled 108 pots with cow urine and dung, chanting mantras for purification. Merely chanting mantras or performing havan does not sanctify the casteist purification process.”
He emphasized that this issue resonates with millions who face this harsh reality daily. It is essential to teach a lesson to such wrongdoers. Therefore, his outrage is not just personal but a reflection of the sentiments of countless individuals affected by this mindset. This is why he raised the issue in the House to draw the government’s attention.
Kharge urged JP Nadda to ensure that, in light of the facts and the assurances given in the Rajya Sabha, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand is directed to file an FIR against those involved in the purification incident at Ramleela Maidan following his public meeting in Haldwani.
