Mangalore, February 12: In Mangalore, the parents of a 23-year-old college student have accused their daughter of being part of a ‘conspiracy’ after she married a man from a different community. They have requested police intervention, claiming she was brainwashed and coerced into the relationship.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, the girl’s parents, Vishwanath and Lata, alleged that their daughter, Vaishali, was blackmailed and threatened to enter the relationship. They urged authorities to ensure her safety and bring her back home, stating, “She is not the type to fall in love like this. She has been brainwashed. This is a conspiracy.”

Based on the parents’ complaint, the Surathkal police in Mangalore have registered a case and initiated an investigation. The police confirmed that efforts are underway to locate the woman and understand the circumstances surrounding the case.

Lata expressed, “We have raised our child with love. She was with us and never hurt our feelings. We do not know what happened. We suspect a conspiracy involving Muslims behind this incident.”

She continued, “She was doing well in her studies and regularly communicated with us. We had no suspicions. We were shocked to learn about the incident. We found out through a WhatsApp message. We reached Surathkal and filed a complaint with the police. She wanted to build a career after her studies and had told us she would marry the boy we chose for her.”

The parents stated, “We want our daughter back. She should return to us. We know nothing about the boy.”

Vaishali, originally from Kasargod district in Kerala, was pursuing a degree in criminology at a college near Surathkal and was living in a paying guest accommodation.

According to police, she registered her marriage on January 31 with Mohammad Midlaj, a resident of Wayanad, at the sub-registrar’s office in Wayanad.

Her parents learned about the registered marriage through social media. Vishwanath, who was abroad, returned after hearing the news. The family later visited the PG accommodation where Vaishali was staying and obtained CCTV footage showing her leaving the premises on February 9.

After being unable to contact her, they filed a missing person report at the Surathkal police station. Following this, a case was registered, and further investigations commenced.

The parents also mentioned that they traveled to Wayanad and met their daughter at a local police station. According to them, Vaishali initially expressed a desire to return home and provided a written statement to that effect. However, they alleged that they were only allowed to speak with her briefly and claimed that the local police sided with the young man.
