Etah, June 26: A tragic incident occurred during a Muharram procession in Etah district, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday morning. One young man lost his life, and seven others sustained injuries. All the injured individuals have been admitted to a nearby hospital.
Reports indicate that during the procession in the Aliganj area of Etah, the Tazia collided with a high-tension power line. This resulted in an electric shock, affecting several participants and causing chaos in the procession.
Local police and administration quickly attempted to manage the situation. However, by the time help arrived, one young man had already died, identified as Sheikh.
Sheikh’s uncle, Irfan Khan, stated that the procession was taking place in the presence of police. He noted that there was an 11,000-volt line overhead. The Tazia struck the power line, leading to multiple injuries, including the fatality of his nephew. Upon hearing the news, the family rushed to the hospital.
Irfan Khan alleged that no electricity worker was present during the procession. He believes that if someone had been there to temporarily halt the power supply, this tragedy could have been avoided.
A relative of the deceased, Arif Khan, commented, “The Tazia was being carried out according to tradition. When it reached near the old tehsil, vehicles were parked nearby. We requested them to move the vehicles and stop the electricity supply, but nothing was done. The Tazia collided with the power line during the procession.”
Arif Khan explained that the Tazia being carried was approximately 21 feet long, held aloft by participants. It was raised several times, which ultimately led to it touching the power line.
