Bengaluru, June 8: The Karnataka government has adopted a stringent approach towards underage drinking and the entry of minors into establishments serving alcohol. State Minister Priyank Kharge has directed city police officials to issue notices to all pubs, breweries, bars, clubs, lounges, restaurants, and other venues serving alcohol, ensuring strict measures to prevent minors from entering and consuming alcohol.
Priyank Kharge emphasized that this issue transcends mere licensing; it is a serious matter concerning youth safety and public health. He instructed all establishments serving alcohol to implement rigorous age verification processes at entry points and before serving drinks.
A recent study involving 4,093 students in Bengaluru revealed alarming statistics. According to the study, one in three teenagers faces health risks due to alcohol or tobacco use. Approximately 33% of students admitted to consuming alcohol, while nearly 18% reported tobacco addiction. The study also indicated that the average age for starting to drink is 17, with some cases revealing initiation as early as 8 years old.
The minister stated that all establishments must strictly enforce the ‘No ID, No Entry’ rule. No individual will be allowed entry without valid identification. Government-issued ID will be mandatory for age verification. Strict action will be taken against establishments serving alcohol to minors, holding owners, managers, and license holders directly accountable.
Additionally, all venues are required to keep CCTV cameras operational at entrances and secure the footage. Police have also been instructed to enhance coordination with educational institutions, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), and civic groups.
Priyank Kharge reiterated that commercial gain cannot come at the expense of children’s safety and future. He made it clear that the Karnataka government will adopt a ‘zero tolerance’ policy against establishments providing alcohol to minors or promoting such activities.
He concluded, “No ID, No Entry, and absolutely no alcohol for minors.”
