Karnataka Deputy CM Criticizes Kumaraswamy Over Bidadi Township Project Dispute

Bengaluru, June 23: Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara has accused Union Heavy Industries and Steel Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy of engaging in political criticism rather than offering constructive suggestions regarding the proposed Bidadi Township Project near Bengaluru.

Speaking to reporters near the residence of senior Congress leader and former minister H.K. Patil, Parameshwara emphasized that the state government has no intention of displacing farmers. He stated that the project will only proceed after addressing farmers’ concerns through dialogue and consensus.

Parameshwara noted that the government is listening to public grievances and aims to build trust with farmers, proceeding with the project collaboratively.

He clarified that his visit to H.K. Patil’s home was a courtesy call, as Patil had been unwell for the past ten days and wished to meet him. Parameshwara decided to visit Patil personally on Tuesday.

“We had a productive discussion. We talked about strengthening the organization and effective governance for public welfare,” he said.

When asked if the meeting was among like-minded leaders, Parameshwara highlighted their long-standing political connection and friendship.

Regarding the dispute over the Bidadi Township Project, he mentioned that Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has invited Kumaraswamy for discussions on this issue.

Parameshwara stated, “The Chief Minister has written to Kumaraswamy, inviting him to a meeting with ministers and officials at Vidhana Soudha on June 26 at 11 AM. He also mentioned that Kumaraswamy could bring any experts or representatives he wishes.”

Kumaraswamy proposed that the discussion take place in Bidadi, including farmers and other stakeholders, and requested to hold it on June 27 instead of the originally scheduled date due to prior commitments.

“We will see what decision the Chief Minister makes regarding this request,” Parameshwara added.

He indicated that the state cabinet has already discussed the township project, including funding issues involving agencies like the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) and Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO).

Parameshwara expressed concern that the project is becoming increasingly politicized. He stated, “The government will collectively decide how to implement this project in the best possible way, keeping it free from political influence. Kumaraswamy is referencing old statements from Congress leaders and attempting to politicize the issue. Instead, he should provide constructive suggestions. We are ready to address his concerns and clarify the reasons behind the project.”

The Deputy Chief Minister reiterated that the government’s goal is not to displace farmers from their land.

“We want to gain the trust of farmers and proceed with their consent. Some farmers have informed us that they have barren land and are willing to part with it if they receive appropriate compensation. If fair compensation is provided, they can buy land elsewhere and continue farming. We are adopting this approach,” he explained.

Parameshwara warned that viewing this issue solely through a political lens could complicate matters.

When asked about the potential swearing-in of BJP leaders at a religious site amid recent cross-voting controversies in the Legislative Council elections, Parameshwara responded, “Let that matter be left to God Manjunatha.”
