Kolkata, June 23: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has leveled serious allegations against the former government led by Mamata Banerjee during the annual Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS). He accused the previous Trinamool Congress administration of significant financial irregularities related to the event.
During a debate on the budget proposals presented by the state’s Finance Minister, Swapan Dasgupta, Adhikari claimed that the former government illegally paid ₹325 crores to a national industry association for the summit.
On Monday, Finance Minister Dasgupta presented the full budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year, with discussions set to continue until June 25.
In Tuesday’s discussions, Adhikari directly attacked Mamata Banerjee over the alleged corruption at BGBS. He showed opposition legislators a file, claiming it contained Banerjee’s signature approving the illegal payment of ₹324.73 crores to the industry association.
Adhikari stated that this payment was entirely unlawful and represented a clear case of corruption. He emphasized that this was merely the tip of the iceberg, asserting that every act of corruption by the previous government would be thoroughly investigated.
This is not the first time Adhikari has raised this issue. On June 13, he informed reporters that he had ordered an investigation into the ₹635 crores paid to an advertising and event management company for organizing BGBS under Banerjee’s leadership.
He previously stated that the government had made this substantial payment to a special event management company for the summit, and an inquiry would determine the specific allocations for the ₹635 crores spent. However, at that time, he did not directly accuse Banerjee of involvement, a contrast to his statements made in the assembly today.
