Bengaluru, July 22: Opposition leader R. Ashok condemned the attack on Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) officials during a demolition drive in Shivajinagar. He described the incident as a sign of deteriorating law and order in Karnataka.
Ashok’s statement comes amid a heated political debate following the assault on civic officials. The police have already arrested several individuals and initiated an investigation into the incident.
In a statement, Ashok labeled the attack on duty-bound government officials as “extremely condemnable” and questioned the state government’s silence on the matter.
He stated, “The life-threatening attack on GBA officials removing encroachments from the footpath in Shivajinagar is highly condemnable. Such an assault on officials performing their duties is clear evidence of how severely law and order has deteriorated in the state.”
Targeting Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, Ashok questioned why the minister had not spoken out against the incident.
He asked, “Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, who makes reels in front of the camera during demolition drives in other parts of Bengaluru, why are you silent now? Isn’t it your responsibility to stand with officials during such attacks? Or is vote-bank politics more important to you than the rule of law?”
Ashok also criticized Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, questioning the government’s response to the incident.
He remarked, “Why is your government silent even after a life-threatening attack on officials performing their legal duties? Is political gain more important to you than enforcing the law? Does the government’s silence in such matters not indirectly protect the guilty?”
The opposition leader further questioned whether the state government had the courage to conduct the demolition drive in Shivajinagar.
He queried, “Does the government lack the courage to remove encroachments in Shivajinagar? Or do the laws of the country not apply to certain areas? Is there a dual system of law in the state?”
Ashok demanded immediate action from the government, insisting that all responsible individuals be arrested and the safety of officials on duty be ensured.
He concluded, “The accused should be arrested immediately, and strict legal action should be initiated against them. The safety of officials performing their duties must be guaranteed. Prove through action, not just words, that everyone is equal before the law.”
