Jitan Ram Manjhi Advocates Broader Perspective on Population Growth

Patna, April 25: Central Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Jitan Ram Manjhi sparked controversy during a media address in Gaya on Saturday regarding population growth.

He emphasized that society should not adopt a narrow mindset concerning population increase or childbirth.

His comments were in response to statements made by Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, also known as Bageshwar Baba, who recently urged people during a visit to Nagpur to have four children and dedicate one to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Reacting to the controversy, Jitan Ram Manjhi stated that he was not fully aware of the exact context of Shastri’s remarks but stressed the importance of adopting a broader perspective on population issues.

He asserted that there should be no narrow thinking when it comes to increasing population or having children.

Further elaborating on his views, the MSME Minister noted that humans are born not just to fill their stomachs but also to work with their hands and think with their minds. It is impossible to predict how great an individual child may become. If job opportunities are created and governance is effective, everyone can be supported.

Jitan Ram Manjhi pointed out that India’s current population is approximately 1.4 billion. He cited historical examples, stating that in ancient times, when the population was similarly vast, India was regarded as a ‘Vishwa Guru’ (global leader), and there was no strict concern regarding population size.

Clarifying his stance, the MSME Minister mentioned that he does not advocate for uncontrolled population growth. However, he stressed that if the population increases, it becomes essential to focus on education, skill development, and entrepreneurship.

Manjhi’s statements have stirred political circles, with experts believing that this could intensify the ongoing debate over population policy in Bihar.

The BJP’s ideological organization, the RSS, has historically supported higher birth rates among the Hindu population in India.
