Sardar Sarovar Dam Reaches 96% Capacity Amid Heavy Rainfall in Gujarat

Gandhinagar, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : The Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada River has reached 96% of its total capacity, according to the latest monsoon assessment released on Saturday. In addition, 206 reservoirs across Gujarat have collectively filled to 70.49% of their water storage capacity.

Out of the state’s reservoirs, 30 dams are completely full, while 38 others have water levels between 70% and 100%. Furthermore, 25 reservoirs are holding between 50% and 70% of their capacity, 40 are at 25% to 50%, and 73 have less than 25% full.

Due to these water levels, 45 dams are on high alert, 13 are under alert, and 10 have been issued warnings. As of Saturday morning, Gujarat recorded a total of 31 inches of rainfall during the monsoon season, which is approximately 88% of the state’s seasonal average.

Regionally, South Gujarat has experienced the highest average rainfall, reaching 113.52% of its seasonal average. East-Central Gujarat follows with 88.57%, North Gujarat at 70.33%, Saurashtra at 67.86%, and Kutch at 57.16%.

In the last 24 hours, rainfall was recorded in 224 talukas across 31 districts, averaging 17.20 millimeters statewide. The highest rainfall was noted in Meghraj, Aravalli, and Gir Gadhda, Gir Somnath, each receiving three inches. Ahmedabad city recorded 2.87 inches, Talod in Sabarkantha saw 2.52 inches, and Dediyapada in Narmada received 2.40 inches.

As heavy rains continue, rescue operations have been underway to relocate residents to safer areas. Since June 1, a total of 85,456 individuals have been moved to safety, with 9,822 people rescued. Navsari has seen the highest number of evacuations, with 29,198 people moved, followed by Valsad with 22,214 and Surat with 17,992.

To support disaster management and rescue efforts, 10 teams from the NDRF and 28 platoons from the SDRF have been deployed across various regions of Gujarat. Additionally, four NDRF teams and five SDRF teams are on standby.

With 113.52% of the seasonal average rainfall recorded in South Gujarat, the overall monsoon rainfall for the state has reached 88% of its seasonal average.
