Jharkhand Chief Minister Accuses Assam Government of Electoral Interference

Guwahati, April 6: Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has made serious allegations against the Assam government via social media while campaigning for the Assam Assembly elections. He claims that attempts are being made to obstruct him and his party leaders from campaigning, with constitutional institutions being misused for this purpose.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) is contesting 16 seats in Assam this time. Soren has been stationed in Assam for the past eight days, conducting public meetings and outreach campaigns. On Monday, he accused the authorities of preventing him from campaigning and meeting people in the Chabua and Rongonodi assembly constituencies.

He stated that his programs were denied permission under the pretext of the “Prime Minister’s program,” which he believes is against democratic processes. Soren asserted that democracy and constitutional institutions are being misused under the influence of power to silence the opposition’s voice. He labeled this a “conspiracy,” insisting that his struggle will neither bend nor halt.

Soren addressed some gatherings via mobile phone. He described the denial of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to Assam’s tribal community as “national injustice” and reiterated the demand for a minimum wage of 500 rupees for tea garden workers. He emphasized that this election is not just about power, but a fight for respect, rights, and existence. In his message, he urged the tribal, Dalit, backward, and tea garden worker communities to unite.

He noted that these marginalized groups, long subjected to exploitation, have now awakened and will claim their rights. Soren also alleged that a day prior, MLA Kalpana Soren was similarly prevented from holding a meeting. Despite these obstacles, he vowed that his campaign would continue, and on April 9, voters would respond by casting their ballots in favor of the “Bow and Arrow” election symbol.
