Jaipur, October 15 (Daily Kiran): In a major crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Jhalawar Police has, for the first time in the district, invoked the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act, 1988 against a habitual drug trafficker.

Jhalawar Police

Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar said the action was taken against Shyamlal alias Shyama, son of Ramlal Banjara (46), resident of Luhariya Dih, Sadar Police Station, Jhalawar. The accused has been identified as an active member of the district’s drug network.

This stringent Act is imposed on serious offenders who are persistently involved in narcotics smuggling and whose detention is deemed essential for the protection of public health and the national economy.

Following a detailed report prepared by Jhalawar Police, Ravi Sharma, Secretary, Home (Law) Department, Government of Rajasthan, issued an order on October 14 under Section 3 of the PIT NDPS Act, directing the detention of Shyamlal alias Shyama. Subsequently, the accused was taken into custody and sent to Ajmer High-Security Jail. The action was executed by a special team led by the Sadar Police Station Officer.

SP Amit Kumar said Shyamlal has been involved in criminal activities since 1996, with a long history of offences including drug trafficking, robbery, attempt to murder, Arms Act violations, excise offences, theft, and assault. A total of 16 criminal cases have been registered against him, out of which eight have already resulted in convictions.

His criminal record includes five NDPS cases registered at Sadar Jhalawar, Suket, and Anantpura-Kot police stations. Police officials said his violent nature had instilled fear among locals, preventing them from coming forward with information.

Considering the likelihood of future offences and the negative impact of his drug trade on public health and welfare, the police decided to take this preventive and most stringent legal action under the PIT NDPS Act.
