New Delhi, August 1: Jasmine Lemboria achieved a remarkable feat on Saturday by defeating Northern Ireland’s Michaela Walsh 5-0 to secure the gold medal in the women’s 57-kilogram weight category. Following her victory, Jasmine expressed her satisfaction, stating that her hard work had finally paid off.
After winning the gold medal, Jasmine remarked, “It feels amazing. The last time we were here in 2022, I was young and lacked experience, which is why I only won a bronze medal. This time, I worked very hard, and that effort has been rewarded. My fights were quite good. The Irish boxer was a Commonwealth Games medalist. My coach devised a strategy against her, and in the end, we succeeded.”
Despite the growing demand for a biopic about her life story, Jasmine remains grounded. After her historic win, she mentioned that she had never considered making a film about her journey and believes that many other Indian athletes deserve that recognition more than she does.
“I haven’t thought about it at all. There are many better athletes than me in India. I would prefer that biopics be made about them. I draw inspiration from all of them. My focus right now is solely on sports,” Jasmine stated.
The 24-year-old, who serves in the Indian Army, previously won gold at the World Championship in 2025 and has secured two gold medals at the World Boxing Cup. She also won a bronze medal for India at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Celebrations erupted in Jasmine’s family home in Bhiwani, Haryana, following her historic achievement. Her father, Jai Veer Lemboria, shared with reporters, “Our hearts raced during the final match, but she fulfilled her dream. She has been practicing boxing for ten years. When she returns home, there will be a grand welcome. She loves churma, and we will make it for her.”
Her mother, Jogender, expressed her pride, saying, “My daughter has won the gold medal. I feel very happy and proud. I expected this from her, and she has met my expectations. Our hearts were racing during the bout. When she is home, she enjoys ghee, milk, yogurt, and churma, and I will prepare it for her.”
Meanwhile, Preeti Pawar also made headlines by winning the gold medal in the women’s 54-kilogram competition, defeating Canada’s Scarlett Savana Delgado 5-0 in the final bout. Preeti shared, “I am very happy. There are still more boxers in the finals, and I am quite excited about that. I had a lot of confidence in myself. Now we will take a short break before rejoining the camp to prepare for the Asian Games.”
