Japan Welcomes Democratic Process in Bangladesh Elections

New Delhi, February 17: Bangladesh held its national parliamentary elections on February 12, with results announced on February 13. Observers from various countries and organizations were invited to assess whether democratic processes were followed during the elections. Japan was among these observers, and they have now released their statement following their monitoring of the electoral process.

In their statement, the Japanese government said, “On February 13, the Bangladesh Election Commission announced the results of the 13th General Election held on February 12. Japan welcomes the reliable and largely peaceful conduct of the general election.” The observer mission from Japan, led by former ambassador to Bangladesh, Mr. Watanabe Masato, included officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Japanese embassy in Bangladesh, as well as an external expert. According to Japan’s election observer mission, the electoral process adhered to established procedures.

The statement further noted, “Japan welcomes Bangladesh’s efforts as a democratic nation and is committed to continuing our cooperation based on a strategic partnership to enhance development, prosperity, and mutual relations.”

Tarique Rahman, president of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has taken the oath as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. The new cabinet includes 25 ministers and 24 state ministers from the BNP. However, several senior leaders of the BNP did not secure positions in the new cabinet.

The new cabinet of Bangladesh comprises 25 ministers, including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Salahuddin Ahmed, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram, Abu Zafar Md. Jahid Hossain, Abdul Awal Mintu, Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad, Mizanur Rahman Meenu, Nitai Roy Chowdhury, Khandakar Abdul Muktdir, Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Jahir Uddin Swapan, Afroza Khanam Rita, Md. Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Ani, Asadul Habib Dulu, Md. Asaduzzaman, Zakaria Tahir, Dipen Diwan, ANM Ehsanul Haq Milan, Sardar Md. Sakawat Hossain, Fakir Mahbub Anam, Sheikh Robiul Alam, Mohammad Amin ur Rashid, and Khalilur Rahman.
