Kanpur, May 24: In Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, the situation surrounding the ITBP soldier’s mother’s hand amputation has become clearer following discussions at the police commissioner’s office. The soldier’s colleagues were reportedly upset over alleged negligence in her treatment and the lack of action against the hospital.
Commandant Gaurav Prasad met with the police commissioner to address the issue, which also involved the Chief Medical Officer (CMO). A lengthy discussion took place among the CMO, police commissioner, and ITBP Kanpur commandant.
Dr. Haridatt Nemi, the Chief Medical Officer, has been asked to provide a clearer report on the matter. Additional Police Commissioner (Law and Order) Vipin Tada denied claims that ITBP personnel surrounded the commissionerate premises. He clarified that the soldier had come with several senior officials to discuss the issue while his colleagues waited outside. After a conversation, the soldiers were sent back.
Tada also mentioned that the police commissioner has requested a clearer report from the CMO. Officials stated that the investigation would be fact-based, and if negligence is proven, legal action will follow.
The ITBP soldier had previously submitted a complaint alleging that due to negligent treatment at the hospital, his mother had to undergo amputation. Since the case falls under the health department, the complaint was forwarded to the CMO. A committee of doctors was formed to investigate all aspects, but the soldier raised objections regarding the report.
After discussions, the CMO and the soldier agreed to a re-investigation. The findings from this investigation will determine the next steps for legal action.
Commandant Gaurav Prasad stated that an appointment was made with the police commissioner to discuss the medical report regarding the soldier’s mother’s amputation. He emphasized that the officers and soldiers were there for this purpose and that he was inside while the soldiers waited outside, suggesting that the situation may have been misunderstood. He dismissed the claims of a siege as baseless, asserting that they have full support from the police commissioner.
Dr. Haridatt Nemi confirmed that they had discussed the investigation report, which he believes is accurate, but they will re-examine the points raised during the conversation. A final investigation report will be issued afterward.
The soldier, Vikas Singh, originally from Aliamau village in Fatehpur, is currently posted at the Maharajpur ITBP camp. He reported that his mother, Nirmala Devi (56), was experiencing breathing difficulties, constipation, and weakness. Initially, she was treated at the ITBP hospital in Maharajpur and later referred to a higher center. She was subsequently admitted to a private hospital in Kanpur and placed on a ventilator.
Vikas alleges that during her treatment, she received an incorrect injection, causing her hand to turn black and swell. As her condition deteriorated, she was admitted to another private hospital on Bithoor Road, where her hand was amputated.
