Marathon Celebrates 650th Birth Anniversary of Guru Ravi Das in Patiala

Patiala, September 1: A marathon was organized at Polo Ground to commemorate the 650th birth anniversary of Guru Ravi Das. Punjab’s Health Minister, Dr. Balbir Singh, flagged off the event. A large number of school students, youth, and sports enthusiasts participated with great enthusiasm. The event aimed to connect the younger generation with the teachings of Guru Ravi Das and to promote a message against substance abuse and other social evils.

After initiating the marathon, Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh spoke to reporters, emphasizing the need to engage children and youth in education and sports. He noted that Guru Ravi Das preached equality, humanity, and brotherhood. His teachings remain relevant to society even after 650 years.

Dr. Singh highlighted that Guru Ravi Das raised his voice against discrimination and hatred in society, inspiring everyone to treat each person equally. He pointed out that challenges like discrimination and hatred still exist today, making it essential to pass on the teachings of Guru Sahib to the new generation. He stated that events like marathons are effective means to engage youth in positive activities.

The Health Minister also expressed concern about the rising trend of online gaming among children and cyber crimes. He mentioned that with the increasing use of technology, children face new challenges. Sometimes, they get caught up in mental and social issues due to online gaming, leading to problems for their families.

He stressed the need for parents, teachers, and society to work together to protect children from these challenges. It is not enough to just prevent negative activities; it is also crucial to involve them in education, sports, cultural activities, and other creative pursuits.

Dr. Singh remarked that substance abuse is a serious social challenge in Punjab. He emphasized that both government efforts and community involvement are necessary to keep youth away from drugs. He stated that if children are connected with sports and education from a young age, it can help them steer clear of substance abuse and other social evils.

He concluded that healthy youth are the foundation for a strong Punjab. Sports instill discipline, self-confidence, and teamwork in young people, making it essential to encourage such events.

In response to questions about student elections and related controversies at Punjab University, Dr. Singh said that winning elections increases the responsibility of student leaders. He urged them to work for the welfare of all students and prioritize student well-being over politics.

He acknowledged that allegations during elections are natural but stressed the importance of all parties working together to address student issues after the election process concludes. Maintaining a positive and healthy environment in universities is a collective responsibility.

When asked about Akali leader Vikram Majithia, the Health Minister criticized opposition leaders for not discussing real issues facing Punjab. He stated that education, health, employment, welfare of the poor, and sports are the most important topics that require serious discussion to resolve the problems of the common people.

Dr. Singh also raised concerns about the country’s GDP and employment issues, stating that if GDP is growing, it should reflect in job opportunities and the purchasing power of the common man. He called for serious attention to issues related to unemployment, education, and health services.

Regarding the case involving Rahul Gandhi and political issues raised by Punjab Congress President Raja Wadding, Dr. Singh noted that political activities would intensify as elections approach. He warned that targeting leaders and political accusations might increase, but it is crucial to keep society away from hatred and divisive politics.

He emphasized that Guru Nanak and other Gurus preached messages of humanity, equality, and brotherhood, which need to be adopted more strongly in today’s times.

During the event, Dr. Singh also expressed concern for the health of a hospitalized leader, wishing for their quick recovery. He mentioned that necessary instructions have been given to gather information regarding the matter. He reiterated that connecting children with education and sports while protecting them from substance abuse and social evils is the foundation for a healthy, safe, and strong Punjab.
