
Pune, June 3: The investigation into the tragic deaths caused by toxic alcohol consumption in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad has accelerated. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has established 10 special investigation teams to delve deeper into the case. During the investigation, two suspects linked to the supply of methanol for producing the toxic alcohol have been identified, and questioning is ongoing.
According to police reports, multiple fatalities occurred between May 26 and May 28 due to the consumption of illicit hand-distilled alcohol in the Dapodi and Hadapsar police jurisdictions. Two separate cases were registered on May 29, with one filed under various sections and the Maharashtra Prohibition Act at the Dapodi police station.
The CID has been assigned to investigate both cases, forming a total of 10 teams to explore different angles of the situation. So far, six suspects have been arrested in the Dapodi case, and they are currently in police custody for further questioning.
Meanwhile, the state excise department has also taken action, arresting three individuals: Akash Jadhav (Hadapsar), Irfan Nisar Qureshi (Pawar Wasti, Dapodi), and Aryan Sanjay Dhotre (Gokhalenagar). These suspects are also being processed for arrest in connection with the CID’s ongoing investigations.
During the inquiry, the Thane division of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has registered another case related to the toxic alcohol incident at the Naroli police station in Thane city. Efforts are underway to link these suspects to the CID investigation.
Officials reported that CCTV footage, alcohol samples, and other crucial evidence have been seized from various crime scenes. These items have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Pune for scientific examination. Additionally, the suspects’ mobile phones have been confiscated, and digital analysis is currently in progress.
According to investigation agencies, based on the evidence collected so far, two suspects involved in the methanol supply chain have been identified. Interrogations are ongoing to gather more information about the supply chain and any other potential accomplices.
