India’s Medical Tourism Market Set to Double by 2030, Government Reports

New Delhi, May 2: The government announced on Saturday that India is emerging as a major hub for Medical Value Travel (MVT), with the medical tourism market expected to grow from approximately $8.7 billion in 2025 to around $16.2 billion by 2030.

Globally, the MVT market was valued at about $115.6 billion in 2022 and is projected to reach nearly $286.1 billion by 2030, with an annual growth rate of approximately 10.8%.

An official statement highlighted that rising healthcare costs, long wait times, and the increasing burden of lifestyle diseases are driving people to seek treatment abroad.

The rise of MVT in India is fueled by the integration of traditional health systems like Ayurveda with advanced medical infrastructure. Additionally, strong policy support, digital facilities, and initiatives such as the Ayush visa and regional medical centers are bolstering this sector.

India’s MVT system operates in two segments: medical tourism for serious illnesses and wellness tourism based on practices like yoga and Ayurveda. Together, these cater to the growing demand for advanced treatment and preventive healthcare.

In 2025, India welcomed 9.15 million foreign tourists, with 507,244 visiting for medical treatment, representing about 5.5% of total foreign tourists.

Key countries sending medical tourists to India in 2025 included Bangladesh (325,127), Iraq (30,989), Uzbekistan (13,699), Somalia (11,506), Turkmenistan (10,231), Oman (9,738), and Kenya (9,357).

According to the Medical Tourism Index 2020-21, India ranked 10th among the top 46 medical tourism countries worldwide and 5th among the top 10 wellness destinations in the Asia-Pacific region.

India’s healthcare services are supported by robust quality standards and internationally recognized certification systems. Hospitals and healthcare providers across the country are accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH), ensuring patient safety and treatment quality.

Looking ahead, the government has proposed the establishment of five regional medical hubs in the 2026-27 budget. These hubs will include medical, educational, and research facilities, along with Ayush centers and MVT service centers.
