Glasgow, August 2: An Indian restaurant in Glasgow has found itself in hot water after inviting Indian athletes who excelled at the Commonwealth Games for dinner. The establishment, named “Mr. Singh India – The Home of Curry,” provided napkins featuring an outline map of India that sparked controversy.
Bronze medal-winning boxer Lovlina Borgohain expressed her displeasure upon noticing that the map did not fully represent the northeastern region of the country. She stated, “The map on the napkin does not include our Northeast. Every part of India is essential and should be represented.”
Ajay Singh, President of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), backed Borgohain and pointed out additional inaccuracies on the napkin, including an incomplete representation of Jammu and Kashmir. He urged the restaurant management to promptly remove the erroneous napkins and correct the map to reflect India’s complete territorial integrity. However, the restaurant has yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter.
“Mr. Singh India” is a well-known dining spot in Glasgow, frequently visited by sports teams and prominent figures. For over three decades, this restaurant has served a family story that blends Punjabi heritage with Scottish spirit.
Run by the Singh family across four generations, the restaurant showcases a fusion of Punjabi culinary traditions and Scottish influences through its food, hospitality, and community engagement. This creates a dining experience that reflects the cultural exchanges that have shaped the city over the past thirty years.
During the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Indian athletes secured a total of 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze, placing India fourth overall.
