
Nicosia, May 28: Indian Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met with the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, on Thursday. The two leaders discussed the changing dynamics in West Asia and India’s interests in the Mediterranean region.
Following the meeting, Dr. Jaishankar shared on social media platform X, “It was a pleasure to meet President Nikos Christodoulides of the Republic of Cyprus today. He conveyed greetings from President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”
He further stated, “The positive outcomes from the recent state visit have elevated our partnership to the next phase. I assured the President of strong follow-up. We also discussed the evolving situation in West Asia/Middle East and India’s interests in the Mediterranean.”
Dr. Jaishankar is currently on an official visit to Cyprus, where he participated in an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers and met with counterparts from various countries, including the Netherlands, Poland, France, Ukraine, Estonia, and Saudi Arabia.
Notably, Christodoulides visited India from May 20-23, significantly enhancing bilateral relations. After their meeting at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, PM Narendra Modi announced that both nations agreed to elevate their relationship to a strategic partnership.
After meeting with Christodoulides, PM Modi wrote on social media platform X, “It was a pleasure to meet President Nikos Christodoulides in Delhi. We had extensive discussions on strengthening India-Cyprus friendship. Given our close ties, we have decided to elevate our friendship to a strategic partnership.”
He added, “Our partnership is indeed a strong and forward-looking one, based on shared values. The growing investment engagement between our countries is very encouraging, and we hope that trade and economic ties will further strengthen in the future.”
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the discussions between the two countries yielded several significant outcomes, including an agreement to establish a Joint Working Group (JWG) on counter-terrorism, cooperation between the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service and Cyprus’s Diplomatic Academy, as well as collaboration in higher education and research.
