New Delhi, February 21: Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Saturday to discuss ways to advance the strategic partnership between the two nations.
Following the meeting, Jaishankar expressed his honor in a post on X, stating, “I am honored to meet Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during his state visit to India. I greatly appreciate his warm sentiments and guidance in advancing our strategic partnership.”
He added, “I am confident that his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi later today will give new momentum to our relations.”
Afterward, President Lula met with India’s President Droupadi Murmu and PM Modi. A bilateral meeting between PM Modi and President Lula is scheduled to take place. Jaishankar expressed optimism that the discussions would enhance bilateral ties.
Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs stated, “Both leaders will review all aspects of bilateral relations. The Prime Minister is hosting a lunch in honor of the visiting dignitary. They will also exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest, including cooperation in multilateral forums, reformed multilateralism, global governance, and issues related to the Global South.”
It is noteworthy that President Lula arrived in India on February 18 for the second AI Impact Summit, accompanied by a large delegation of approximately 14 ministers and top CEOs from Brazilian companies. The accompanying ministers will hold meetings with their Indian counterparts.
This marks President Lula’s sixth visit to India. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs noted, “He first visited in 2004 as the Guest of Honor for Republic Day celebrations and last visited in September 2023 for the G20 Summit. However, PM Modi and President Lula have frequently met in between. PM Modi made a state visit to Brasília from July 7-8, 2025, marking the first state visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years. The two leaders also met during the G20 in Johannesburg in November 2025.”
India and Brazil share a warm, close, and multifaceted strategic partnership based on shared democratic values, strong people-to-people ties, and growing cooperation in specific sectors. Both large democracies have been strategic partners since 2006.
The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that Brazil is India’s largest trading partner in the LAC region, with deepening ties in trade and investment, defense, agriculture, health and pharmaceuticals, energy (including renewables, essential minerals, rare earth materials), science and technology, and innovation. Collaboration also extends to digital public infrastructure (DPI), AI, space, and people-to-people connections. Both countries share similar views on several international issues, including UN reforms, climate change, and combating terrorism.
The Ministry emphasized that President Lula’s state visit offers an opportunity for both sides to strengthen their bilateral strategic partnership on mutually beneficial issues and to create a forward-looking agenda for cooperation on bilateral, regional, and global platforms.
