Indian Ambassador Meets Nepals Foreign Minister to Discuss Bilateral Relations

Kathmandu, April 6: Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, met with Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal on Monday to discuss bilateral relations and cooperation.

Shishir Khanal was appointed as Nepal’s Foreign Minister following his swearing-in as the new Prime Minister on March 27, led by the National Independent Party (RSP).

The Nepalese Foreign Ministry announced on social media platform X that “Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava had a courtesy meeting with Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal at the Ministry on Monday.”

During the meeting, Ambassador Srivastava extended congratulations to Khanal on his appointment as Foreign Minister on behalf of India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar.

The Foreign Ministry stated, “Several issues related to Nepal-India relations and cooperation were discussed on this occasion.”

Earlier, on March 27, Dr. Jaishankar had congratulated Shishir Khanal on assuming the role of Foreign Minister and expressed a desire to work together to strengthen the partnership between the two nations.

Dr. Jaishankar posted on X, “Heartfelt congratulations to Shishir Khanal on assuming the office of Nepal’s Foreign Minister. I look forward to working together to further strengthen our traditional partnership.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Balendra Shah on his swearing-in as Nepal’s Prime Minister and expressed a commitment to enhancing friendship between the two nations for the benefit of their citizens.

Shah thanked Prime Minister Modi for his congratulatory message and expressed hope for advancing various relations between the two countries.

In response to Modi’s message, the Nepalese Prime Minister’s Office stated, “Thank you, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for your kind words and wishes. I am eager to work with you to advance various relations between our two countries for the common welfare of our people.”

The RSP achieved a significant victory in the recent parliamentary elections, securing nearly a two-thirds majority. On March 26, the RSP elected Balendra Shah as the leader of its parliamentary party, leading to his position as the 47th Prime Minister of Nepal.

At 35, Shah is among the youngest Prime Ministers in Nepal’s history.

The relationship between India and Nepal is deeply rooted in the connections among their people, along with shared religious, linguistic, and cultural similarities. According to the Indian Embassy in Nepal, India is the largest development partner for Nepal, with most of its development cooperation focused on major infrastructure projects under grants. India has been actively assisting Nepal’s development since the 1950s.
