India Strengthens Maritime Security with ₹5,083 Crore Defense Deals

New Delhi, March 3: The Ministry of Defense has announced two significant defense agreements worth ₹5,083 crore to enhance the country’s maritime security. These deals include the procurement of new helicopters for the Indian Coast Guard and powerful air defense missiles for the Indian Navy.

The missiles, sourced from Russia, will significantly bolster air defense capabilities. Both agreements were finalized in the presence of Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh at the South Block of the Ministry of Defense. As part of the deal, the Coast Guard will receive six advanced helicopters. The government has signed a contract worth approximately ₹2,901 crore with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in Bengaluru for six Advanced Light Helicopters MK-3 (maritime role).

These twin-engine helicopters are more powerful and secure than the ones currently in use. They will play a crucial role in safeguarding oil platforms and artificial structures at sea, as well as aiding and protecting fishermen. Additionally, these helicopters will be instrumental in search and rescue operations. They will also be utilized for monitoring the marine environment and can take off from maritime vessels when necessary. The introduction of these helicopters will enhance both the strength and reach of the Coast Guard. Notably, this project will create jobs for over 200 small and medium enterprises, generating approximately 6.5 million man-hours of employment. This initiative not only strengthens the defense sector but also promotes job creation and indigenous industries.

Meanwhile, the Indian Navy will receive surface-to-air Strelas missiles as part of a deal worth around ₹2,182 crore. This agreement was made with Russia’s state defense export company, JSC Rosoboronexport.

These missiles are essential for the Indian Navy, providing robust air defense capabilities to counter enemy fighter jets or helicopters. They are also capable of neutralizing drones and other aerial threats. Designed to operate in all weather conditions, these missiles can respond rapidly, enhancing the protection of large naval vessels from aerial attacks.

This development is a testament to the strong partnership between India and Russia, highlighting the long-standing and reliable defense relations between the two nations that have persisted for decades.
