New Chandigarh, June 8: India has achieved a monumental victory against Afghanistan in a single Test match held at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium. The win by an innings and 300 runs marks the largest victory margin for India in Test history by innings.
Winning the toss, the Indian team opted to bat first. They set a formidable score of 564/8 in their first innings, thanks to impressive centuries from KL Rahul (100) and captain Shubman Gill (126).
In response, Afghanistan was bowled out for just 152 runs in their first innings. Debutant Manav Suthar made a remarkable impact, claiming six wickets for only 33 runs. India enforced the follow-on, and Afghanistan collapsed again, managing only 112 runs in their second innings, which lasted just 35.5 overs.
Previously, India recorded their largest innings victory in 2018 against the West Indies in Rajkot, winning by an innings and 272 runs. They also defeated Afghanistan by an innings and 262 runs in a Test match in Bengaluru the same year. In 2007, India triumphed over Bangladesh by an innings and 239 runs, and in 2017, they achieved a similar margin against Sri Lanka in Nagpur.
The largest innings victory on Indian soil was recorded by the West Indies in 1958 at Eden Gardens, where they won by an innings and 336 runs. Additionally, Pakistan holds the record for the largest victory by an Asian team, defeating New Zealand by an innings and 324 runs in 2002.
This match also marks Afghanistan’s heaviest defeat in Test history. Their previous worst loss was against India in 2018, where they lost by an innings and 262 runs. In 2025, they were defeated by Zimbabwe by an innings and 73 runs.
Afghanistan’s second innings score of 112 is their third-lowest in Test history. They were previously all out for just 103 runs against India in June 2018, in the same Test match where they also scored 103 runs in their first innings.
