Magic of Spin: Manav Suthar Shines on Test Debut with Record-Breaking Spell

Chandigarh, June 8: The only Test match between India and Afghanistan is currently taking place at the Maharaja Yadavendra Singh International Cricket Stadium. Afghanistan was bowled out for just 152 runs in their first innings, thanks to the remarkable spin bowling of Manav Suthar, who claimed 6 wickets.

In a stunning 22-over spell, Manav conceded only 33 runs while achieving this feat. He now holds the record for the second-best bowling spell by an Indian on Test debut. The record for the best debut bowling performance belongs to Narendra Hirwani, who took 8 wickets for 61 runs against the West Indies in 1988. Manav is only the second Indian bowler in the last 35 years to take 6 wickets on his Test debut.

Manav delivered the second-best bowling spell in Test cricket history against Afghanistan. The record for the best bowling spell against Afghanistan is held by Rahkeem Cornwall, who took 7 wickets for 75 runs in 2019. Manav Suthar is also only the second Indian bowler in this century to take 5 wickets in his first Test innings, a feat previously accomplished by Amit Mishra in 2008.

The 23-year-old spinner dismantled Afghanistan’s batting lineup with ease. The only batsman to show resilience was Rahmat Shah, who scored the highest for his team with 60 runs. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi managed 20 runs off 48 balls, including 4 boundaries, while Atal contributed 17 runs.

Five Afghan batsmen failed to reach double figures, resulting in India gaining a significant lead of 412 runs based on the first innings. Besides Manav, Prasidh Krishna also bowled exceptionally well, taking 3 wickets for just 37 runs, while Washington Sundar claimed 1 wicket.
