India Elevates Diplomatic Status of High Commissioner to Bangladesh

Dhaka, June 26: The Indian government has granted its High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, a status equivalent to that of a central cabinet minister. This move underscores New Delhi’s commitment to strengthening its ties with Dhaka.

An official memorandum from the Home Ministry stated, “The High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, has been accorded the status of a central cabinet minister in the order of precedence. This designation is personally conferred upon him, and no amendments have been made to the order of precedence. This arrangement is applicable solely for formal and ceremonial events.”

Meanwhile, the U.S. Ambassador to India, Sergio Gore, extended his best wishes to the new High Commissioner, emphasizing the significance of his role.

Gore wrote on X, “Best wishes to Dinesh Trivedi as he takes on responsibilities as India’s new High Commissioner. I look forward to working closely with him as the Special Envoy for South and Central Asia.”

Earlier, on Thursday, Dinesh Trivedi presented his credentials to the President of Bangladesh, Mohammad Shahabuddin, reaffirming India’s commitment to enhancing cooperation across various sectors for the benefit of both nations.

The Indian High Commission in Dhaka announced on X, “Today, Dinesh Trivedi, the High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, presented his credentials to President Mohammad Shahabuddin at Bangabhaban. The High Commissioner conveyed best wishes from the Government of India and reiterated India’s commitment to strengthening the multi-faceted India-Bangladesh partnership for the mutual welfare of the peoples of both sovereign nations.”

In related news, local media reports indicate that India has resumed issuing tourist visas to Bangladeshi citizens after nearly two years. This service had been temporarily suspended following protests in July 2024.

The announcement was made by High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi during his visit to the Indian Visa Application Center in Dhaka, located in Jamuna Future Park.
