Clashes in Manipur Leave One Militant Dead and Six Injured

Imphal, August 30: A violent clash between two factions of a militant organization in Manipur’s Noney district resulted in the death of one militant and injuries to six others. In a separate incident, unidentified individuals threw a grenade at an oil pump in Thoubal district.

According to police officials, intense gunfire erupted between the Zeliangrong United Front-Kamsan (ZUF-K) and Zeliangrong United Front-Jenchui (ZUF-J) cadres in Noney. During the skirmish, a self-proclaimed second lieutenant from the ZUF-J, identified as 29-year-old Jungailing Gonmei, was shot and later succumbed to his injuries. The official reported that six other cadres from the ZUF-J faction were also wounded in the exchange.

The injured militants were transported to a hospital, where their condition is reported to be stable. Authorities are currently gathering information regarding the remaining militants’ conditions and whereabouts.

In a separate incident on Saturday evening, unidentified assailants threw a grenade at an oil pump in Thoubal. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from this explosion. Police stated that the attackers arrived in a vehicle and threw the grenade, which detonated near an oil tanker parked inside the petrol pump premises.

Officials further indicated that an investigation into the incident has commenced, with police reviewing CCTV footage to identify and locate the attackers.

Meanwhile, a joint team from Manipur Police and Assam Rifles apprehended a hardcore militant and his associate in Kakching district. Both individuals are linked to the Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup organization. The arrested militants have been identified as 26-year-old Yumnaam Rohenjit Meitei, also known as Akhui, and 26-year-old Shakachand Yumnaam, referred to as Chand.

Authorities reported that both were allegedly involved in extortion activities. Security personnel recovered two empty rifle magazines, 27 live INSAS rounds, a handset, two slings, a plate body armor, a pair of tactical boots, and a magazine pouch from their possession.
