India and Nepal Agree to Strengthen Bilateral Relations

New Delhi, June 7: The Embassy of Nepal in New Delhi announced on Saturday that Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal and his Indian counterpart S. Jaishankar agreed to deepen and broaden bilateral relations during their discussions.

The press release stated, “Both parties agreed to enhance mutual relations through strong partnerships in essential areas such as development cooperation, improved connectivity, and mutual benefits.”

The release highlighted that the two ministers made joint announcements regarding the initiation of P2P cross-border payment transactions under the MoU signed between NCHL and NPCI in June 2023. They also discussed the handover of 72 health sector and 12 cultural sector post-earthquake reconstruction projects in Nepal, funded by India’s development assistance.

An MoU was exchanged to collaboratively develop a national digital infrastructure for a voice-first language translation platform between the Center for Digital Public Infrastructure and Artificial Intelligence at Kathmandu University School of Engineering and the Digital India Language Division.

During the meeting, both ministers engaged in significant and beneficial discussions on every aspect of Nepal-India relations.

The embassy noted, “The talks included areas such as trade and economic cooperation, cross-border connectivity, energy partnership, water resource management, and enhancing people-to-people ties through sports.”

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the solid partnership between the two neighboring countries. They also reviewed the progress of ongoing bilateral projects and cooperation initiatives, exchanging ideas on ways to expedite their implementation.

Additionally, they discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern, including cooperation in multilateral forums.

Khanal met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in New Delhi on Saturday. They discussed various matters related to further strengthening Nepal-India relations. Foreign Minister Khanal is scheduled to return to Kathmandu on Sunday.
