Dehradun, August 25: Nestled in the serene valleys of Uttarakhand, every temple holds a unique spiritual tale. One such divine site is the Shri Tarkeshwar Mahadev Temple, located in the dense cedar forests of Pauri Garhwal district. According to legend, Lord Shiva stayed here after vanquishing the demon Tarkasur.
Situated about 36 kilometers from Lansdowne, the Shri Tarkeshwar Mahadev Temple (Tarkeshwar Dham) stands at an elevation of approximately 1,800 meters above sea level. This ancient and revered shrine is surrounded by lush cedar and pine forests.
It is believed that the residents of 84 nearby villages offer the first harvest of the year as a tribute to Lord Mahadev. Devotees from far and wide visit to learn more about the temple’s grandeur and its associated legends.
On Tuesday, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami spoke about the temple’s magnificence. He shared a special video related to the temple on the social media platform X, stating, “The Shri Tarkeshwar Mahadev Temple, nestled in the dense cedar forests of Pauri Garhwal district, is renowned for its natural beauty, tranquil atmosphere, and spiritual ambiance. This sacred place dedicated to Lord Shiva provides spiritual peace and divine experiences to its devotees. Special prayers and rituals are performed here during the month of Shravan. Be sure to visit Shri Tarkeshwar Mahadev during your journey to Pauri Garhwal.”
The temple is located about 300 meters down into the forest from the road. Towering cedar trees surround the temple, their natural arrangement resembling the sacred symbol “ॐ.”
Believed to be around 1,500 years old, the temple’s name is linked to the demon Tarkasur, who performed severe penance here to please Lord Shiva. It is said that a statue of Lord Shiva in a dance pose is installed here, with the main Shivling located beneath it.
