India and EU Strengthen Ties for Sustainable Mobility Systems

New Delhi, March 18: Policymakers and industry experts have emphasized the importance of deepening India-EU cooperation in research, innovation, standards, and testing to support sustainable and connected mobility systems, according to an official statement.

India and the European Union (EU) are enhancing their strategic partnership under the India-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC). This collaboration is significantly contributing to sustainable mobility, clean energy technologies, and future-ready industrial partnerships.

To advance this objective, the second India-EU workshop on electric vehicle (EV) charging technologies was held from March 15 to 17 at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, Italy.

The workshop was jointly organized by the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (OPSA) of the Government of India and the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission (DG RTD). Participants included the JRC, the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), and the EU Delegation in India.

The event brought together policymakers, technical experts, standard organizations, testing and research institutions, and industry representatives from both India and the EU to discuss pathways for developing a standardized, interoperable, and future-ready EV charging ecosystem.

The program featured updates on policies and standards, strategic industry perspectives, megawatt charging systems, vehicle-to-grid integration, bidirectional charging, and wireless power transfer, along with laboratory tours of the JRC’s EV and smart grid testing facilities.

OPSA advisor/scientist ‘G’ highlighted the significance of India-EU collaboration in creating a reliable, interoperable, and future-ready charging ecosystem for a smooth mobility transition.

Nienke Buisman, head of the International Cooperation Unit at DG RTD, and Dr. Christian Thiel, senior lead at JRC, also underscored the importance of deepening India-EU cooperation in research, innovation, standards, and testing.

This collaboration is expected to support the transition towards sustainable and connected mobility systems.
